A German man has become the seventh person in the world to be effectively cured of HIV after receiving a stem cell transplant to treat blood cancer. What makes this case especially noteworthy is that, unlike most previous cures, the transplant came from donor cells without the rare HIV-resistant gene mutation scientists once thought was essential for clearing the virus.
